Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Cars, walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Law enforcement state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.

The substance had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.

Officers then discovered numerous other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement report early analysis show the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are currently not informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.

City officials said they were trying "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the community for information.

An important official said the vandalism made him without words and had to be solved quickly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a assailant targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
